The White Collection is Australia's leading destination for designer bridal shoes and accessories, stocking Badgley Mischka, Lola Knight, Bella Belle, Harlo, Charlotte Mills and Elizabeth Bower. This guide is written by our bridal styling team, who help brides choose their finishing pieces every week in our Haberfield showroom in Sydney.

The Short Answer

The best bridal clutch is one that fits your phone, matches the white, ivory or champagne tone of your dress, and has a detachable chain so you can go hands free at the reception. Most designer bridal clutches in Australia sit between $125 and $195 and measure around 20cm to 23cm long. Inside, carry only your phone, lipstick, blotting papers, bobby pins, blister plasters and heel stoppers. Everything else belongs in a wedding day emergency kit held by your maid of honour.

A bridal clutch is one of the last things brides think about and one of the first things they reach for once the ceremony is over. Between the photos, the speeches and the dance floor, you will want your lipstick, your phone and a quick fix for a loose strap without hunting down a bridesmaid.

This guide covers how to choose a bridal bag that suits your dress and your day, the four clutch shapes worth knowing, six designer pieces from our bridal clutches collection, and the wedding day emergency kit checklist we give every bride who asks what to pack.

Do You Actually Need a Bridal Clutch?

Bridal bag · When the bride carries a clutch

You will not carry a bag down the aisle. Your hands are full with your bouquet, and your maid of honour or planner will look after anything you need until the ceremony ends. The clutch comes into its own from the photos onwards, when you are moving between locations, touching up your lipstick and wanting your phone for the moments between the formal shots.

It also earns its place in the flat lay. Photographers love a clutch beside your wedding shoes, earrings and invitation suite, and a satin or pearl bag adds texture to those detail shots. After the wedding it becomes the one accessory you will use again, for engagement parties, the races and every black tie invitation that follows.

How to Choose Your Bridal Clutch

Bridal clutch australia · What to look for

These are the six things our styling team checks when a bride brings her dress swatch and shoes into the showroom.

01

Start with your phone

Your phone is the largest thing you will carry, so measure it before you fall for a bag. Most current phones sit between 15cm and 16.5cm tall. A clutch around 20cm to 23cm long will take it lying flat, with room for a lipstick and compact beside it.

02

Match the tone of your dress, not the shoes

Bright white beside an ivory gown makes the dress look yellow, and ivory beside a pure white gown can look aged. Hold the clutch against your dress swatch in daylight. If your gown is ivory or champagne, choose ivory, soft white or champagne nude.

03

Echo one detail from your accessories

The clutch should share a single detail with the rest of your look. A crystal clasp ties in with crystal shoes or bridal jewellery, while a beaded pearl bag suits pearl wedding earrings. One shared detail looks considered. Three looks like a set.

04

Look for a detachable chain

A removable chain turns a clutch into a shoulder or crossbody bag, which matters once you are holding a glass of champagne and greeting guests. The Badgley Mischka styles in our edit all include one, and the Sirena comes with a 120cm chain for true crossbody wear.

05

Check the closure

A magnetic snap is quick to open with one hand. A framed lift clasp is more secure and less likely to pop open when the bag is passed around. For a dance floor handover, secure wins.

06

Think about life after the wedding

Your dress will be boxed, but a well chosen wedding clutch will come out again. Soft white satin and pearl styles move easily into evening wear, and champagne tones work with almost every formal colour palette.

Hold the clutch against your dress swatch in daylight. The right white disappears into the gown. The wrong one fights it in every photo.

The Four Bridal Clutch Shapes

Wedding clutch styles explained

Each shape carries a different amount and suits a different dress. Here is how they compare.

01

Envelope clutch

Slim and flat with a fold over flap. Holds a phone, lipstick and card. Suits sleek crepe and satin gowns, and a bow detail adds softness.

02

Framed clutch

A structured metal frame with a lift clasp. The most secure and usually the roomiest. A classic choice for formal and black tie weddings.

03

Box clutch

A hard sculpted shape, often beaded or embellished. Works as a statement piece against a simple gown, and photographs beautifully.

04

Pearl or round bag

Soft, rounded and often beaded in pearl. Modern and romantic, and a natural partner for pearl earrings and garden or daytime weddings.

What to Put in Your Bridal Clutch

What does a bride carry · Clutch essentials

The rule is simple. Your clutch holds only what you will reach for yourself. If it needs two hands or a bathroom to use, it goes in the emergency kit instead. Pack these eight things and nothing more.

01

Phone and a card

Put your phone on silent before the ceremony. Tuck one card into the internal pocket in case you need it on the way home.

02

Your exact lipstick or gloss

Ask your makeup artist for the shade and liner they used. Lips are the first thing to fade after the ceremony kiss and the first drinks.

03

Blotting papers and a mini compact

Blotting papers lift shine without disturbing your base, which matters on a warm Australian afternoon.

04

Two or three bobby pins

Enough to re-secure a veil, comb or loose section of hair. Match them to your hair colour, and if you are wearing bridal hair accessories, ask your stylist how each one is anchored.

05

Blister plasters

Gel blister plasters are thin enough to wear under a strap. Put them on at the first sign of rubbing, not after. Our guide to wearing wedding heels all day without pain covers where to place them.

06

Heel stoppers

If any part of your day is on grass, a pair of clear heel stoppers weighs almost nothing and slips straight onto a stiletto. They come in three sizes for heel tips from 8mm to 13mm, so check yours before the day.

07

Breath mints

Mints, not gum. You will be talking to guests at close range all evening.

08

A folded tissue

For the speeches. Everyone thinks they will not need it.

The Wedding Day Emergency Kit Checklist

Wedding day emergency kit · What your maid of honour holds

The emergency kit is the bigger bag that stays with your maid of honour, planner or mum. Pack it the week before, label it and hand it over the night before so it is not one more thing to remember on the morning. We group it into three parts.

01

Repairs

A mini sewing kit with white and ivory thread, safety pins in two sizes, double sided fashion tape, a stain removal pen, clear nail polish for small snags and spare earring backs.

02

Comfort

Extra blister plasters, pain relief, antihistamines, a spare set of heel stoppers, water, a snack that will not stain, and a pair of bridal flats if you plan to change for dancing.

03

Grooming

Deodorant, a travel perfume, hairspray, extra bobby pins, makeup wipes, cotton buds, tissues and a small mirror.

04

Practical

A phone charger and power bank, the vendor contact list, your vows or speech notes, cash for tips, and a lighter for candles if your venue allows them.

If it needs two hands or a bathroom to use, it belongs in the emergency kit, not your clutch.

One more tip from the showroom. If you are wearing new heels, add a pair of comfort insoles to the kit and break the shoes in at home first. A clutch full of plasters will not save a pair of shoes you have never walked in. Our comfortable wedding heels are chosen with that in mind.

Who Holds the Bridal Clutch, and When

Wedding clutch etiquette

Before the ceremony, give your clutch to your maid of honour. She holds it during the vows alongside her own bouquet, or leaves it with a family member in the front row. After the ceremony it comes back to you for the photos, and at the reception it lives on your chair or at the bridal table between dances.

Settle this at the rehearsal. It takes thirty seconds and saves a bridesmaid from juggling two bouquets and a bag while the celebrant waits. Many brides also gift their bridesmaids a matching clutch in a softer colour, which ties the party together in photos and gives each of them a place for their own lipstick and phone.

Your Questions, Answered

Does a bride need a clutch on her wedding day?+

You do not need one for the ceremony, but most brides are glad to have one from the photos onwards. It keeps your phone, lipstick and a few small fixes within reach during the reception, and it photographs beautifully in detail shots. A small satin or pearl bridal clutch in white or ivory is the most versatile choice for Australian weddings.

What size bridal clutch do I need?+

Measure your phone first, because it is the largest thing you will carry. A clutch around 20cm to 23cm long will hold most current phones along with a lipstick, compact and a few bobby pins. If you want to carry more, choose a framed or box shape with some depth, such as the Badgley Mischka Skye at around 7.5cm deep, rather than a flat envelope.

What should a bride carry in her clutch?+

Keep it to what you will reach for yourself during the reception. That is your phone, the lipstick you are wearing, blotting papers, a small compact, two or three bobby pins, blister plasters, heel stoppers if you are on grass, breath mints and a card. Everything bulkier belongs in the emergency kit your maid of honour or planner holds.

What goes in a wedding day emergency kit?+

A good wedding day emergency kit covers repairs, comfort and grooming. Pack a mini sewing kit, safety pins, fashion tape, a stain removal pen, blister plasters, pain relief, spare earring backs, heel stoppers, a phone charger, deodorant, tissues and a snack. Add a pair of flats if you plan to change for dancing, and give the whole kit to one trusted person for the day.

Who holds the bride's bag during the ceremony?+

Traditionally the maid of honour holds the bride's clutch along with her own bouquet, or leaves it with the celebrant's table or a family member in the front row. Some brides simply leave it with their planner until after the ceremony. Decide this at the rehearsal so nobody is juggling it on the day.

Should my bridal clutch match my wedding shoes?+

It does not need to match exactly, but it should share a colour family and one detail. A crystal clasp works with crystal shoes, and a pearl bag suits pearl earrings or pearl heels. Keeping the clutch in the same white, ivory or champagne tone as your dress matters more than matching the shoes.

What colour clutch goes with an ivory wedding dress?+

Choose ivory, soft white or champagne rather than bright white, which can make an ivory dress look yellow beside it. Pearl bags such as the Lola Knight Leo and Belle are ivory toned, and the Badgley Mischka Delilah also comes in Champagne Nude. Silver or gold hardware can then echo your jewellery.
