How long is a cathedral veil?

A cathedral veil measures roughly 300 to 360 centimetres from the comb, which is about 120 to 140 inches, and extends across the floor behind the bride well beyond the train of the dress. It is the longest standard bridal veil length. A chapel veil, the next length down, reaches the floor and trails only slightly at around 230 to 275 centimetres. Exact lengths vary by designer, so check the individual product page before you order.

Is a cathedral veil right for your wedding? It suits formal ceremonies with a long processional: cathedrals, grand churches, heritage venues and black tie receptions. It needs a long aisle to be seen at its most dramatic, and it needs a gown with enough presence to carry it, which usually means a ballgown, an A-line or a full skirt silhouette. Against a slip dress or a short gown, a cathedral length can overwhelm rather than elevate.

Practical considerations: a cathedral veil is worn for the entrance and the ceremony, not the whole day. Most brides remove it before the reception, and almost all remove it before dancing. Nominate one person in your bridal party to manage it during the processional and at the altar, and practise turning in it before the day, since the length behind you changes how you move. On an outdoor ceremony in wind, a longer veil needs a securely anchored comb and ideally a stylist who has pinned one before.

Pearl, crystal and satin trim: the finish along the edge is what decides how the veil reads in photographs.
