Satin, Lace, Leather or Tulle? Wedding Shoe Fabrics Explained

28 September 2026 · Bridal Shoes · The White Collection Australia
The White Collection is Australia's leading destination for designer bridal shoes, stocking Badgley Mischka, Bella Belle, Harlo Australia, Charlotte Mills, Lola Knight and Elizabeth Bower. This guide is written by our bridal styling team, who fit brides in satin, lace, leather and tulle every week in our Haberfield showroom in Sydney.
The Short Answer
Choose satin wedding shoes for a classic, formal look indoors, lace wedding shoes to echo a lace gown and hide small scuffs, leather if your day is outdoors or rain is likely, and tulle or mesh for the lightest, coolest option on a hot Australian summer day. Match the shoe fabric to the fabric at your hem, and choose a leather lining and padded insole whatever the upper, because that is where comfort comes from.
Most brides choose their wedding shoes by heel height and colour, then discover the fabric matters just as much. It decides how the shoe catches the light in photos, how it copes with a lawn or a wet path, and whether it sits naturally beside the hem of your dress or looks like it came from a different outfit.
This guide explains the five fabrics you will find across our wedding shoes: satin, lace, leather, tulle and silk crepe. For each one we cover how it looks, how it wears, where it works best and which designer styles we recommend.

Satin Wedding Shoes
Satin bridal shoes · White satin heels · Ivory satin heels
Satin is the classic bridal fabric for good reason. It has a soft, even sheen that reads as elegant in every light, it suits almost every gown silhouette, and it is the fabric most designers use for their signature styles. Our satin wedding shoes collection is the largest in the store for exactly that reason.
The trade off is care. Satin shows water marks, grass stains and scuffs more readily than any other fabric, and it has very little stretch, so the fit needs to be right from the start. It is at its best at indoor, evening and black tie weddings, and on a smooth ceremony aisle.
When you compare white satin heels with ivory satin heels, hold both against your dress in daylight. Bright white satin can make an ivory gown look yellow, and ivory satin can make a pure white gown look aged. If your ceremony is on grass, choose a satin block or platform heel over a stiletto, and pack a pair of heel stoppers.
Satin is the fabric most brides picture. It is also the one that most needs the right venue, the right colour and a little care on the day.
Lace Wedding Shoes
Lace heels · White lace heels · Lace bridal shoes
Lace heels are one of the fastest growing searches we see, and they make sense for any bride wearing a lace gown. The texture ties the shoe to the dress in close up photos, and because lace is patterned, it hides small scuffs and marks far better than plain satin. Browse our full range of lace wedding shoes, from pointed pumps to block heels.
Most bridal lace is laid over a mesh or satin base. Over mesh, the result is light, breathable and slightly sheer, which is ideal for warm spring and summer weddings. Over satin, you get the texture of lace with the structure and sheen of satin underneath.
Watch the edges. Scalloped lace can occasionally catch on rough ground or on the netting of a full skirt, and some brides find unlined lace slightly scratchy at the heel. Choose a style with a leather lining and wear it around the house for a few evenings before the day.
Leather and Patent Leather Wedding Shoes
Leather wedding shoes · The most durable choice
Leather is the most practical fabric for a wedding shoe. It wipes clean, copes with light rain and damp grass, and softens and moulds to your foot as you wear it. Patent leather adds a high gloss finish that photographs crisply and resists marks even better.
We recommend leather for outdoor ceremonies, vineyard and farm weddings, long days on your feet and brides who want to wear their shoes again. It suits modern, minimal gowns particularly well. Tulle, Mesh and Organza Wedding Shoes
Tulle wedding shoes · Mesh heels · Organza
Tulle and mesh are the lightest wedding shoe fabrics. They are sheer, airy and romantic, and because they let air through, they are the coolest option for a hot January ceremony. Pleated or layered tulle over satin, like the Harlo Glinda below, gives softness and depth without weight. Browse our tulle wedding shoes to see the range.
Organza is tulle's crisper cousin. It holds its shape, so designers use it for bows, ruffles and sculptural details. Both fabrics are delicate. They can snag on rough surfaces and crush if packed carelessly, so store them stuffed with tissue in their box. They pair beautifully with tulle skirts and layered, floaty gowns.
Silk Crepe Wedding Shoes
Silk crepe · Matte and modern
Silk crepe has a fine, matte grain with no shine at all. It is the fabric for brides wearing crepe column gowns, sleek city ceremonies or anything minimal and modern, where a glossy satin shoe would look too formal. Pleated silk crepe adds texture while keeping that quiet, refined finish.
Treat silk crepe as you would satin. It marks with water, so keep it away from wet grass and spray it with a fabric protector ahead of the day. Our bridal shoe care guide covers protection and cleaning for every fabric.
Match your shoes to the fabric at your hem. That is the fabric they will sit beside in every full length photo.

Your Questions, Answered
What is the best fabric for wedding shoes?+
There is no single best fabric, because it depends on your dress and venue. Satin is the classic choice for formal and indoor weddings, lace suits lace gowns and hides small scuffs, and leather is the most durable for outdoor and wet weather days. Tulle and mesh are the lightest and most breathable option for warm Australian summers.
Are satin wedding shoes comfortable?+
Satin itself is a smooth, soft upper, so comfort comes down to the lining, padding and heel. Look for satin shoes with a leather lining and a padded insole, such as the Badgley Mischka Rylan with its leather sole and stable platform block heel. Satin has very little natural stretch, so buy the correct size rather than expecting the shoe to give.
Are lace wedding shoes comfortable?+
Lace wedding shoes are usually built over a mesh or satin base, which makes them light and breathable on warm days. Styles like the Bella Belle Margot pair a lace and pearl mesh upper with a leather lining and heavily padded insole designed for 12 hours of wear. Lace can feel slightly scratchy at the edges, so wear them at home before the day.
What is the most durable fabric for wedding shoes?+
Leather, and patent leather in particular, is the most durable wedding shoe fabric. It wipes clean, resists water marks better than satin, and moulds to your foot as you wear it. The Bella Belle Abby is an ivory patent leather block heel that handles garden paths and dance floors far better than a delicate fabric upper.
Can you wear satin shoes to an outdoor wedding?+
You can, but satin marks easily with water, dirt and grass stains. For an outdoor ceremony, choose a block heel, spray the shoes with a fabric protector a week before, and keep a pair of heel stoppers for lawns. If rain is forecast, leather or a lace upper will cope better than plain satin.
Should my wedding shoes match my dress fabric?+
They do not need to match exactly, but they should feel related. Lace shoes suit lace gowns, satin shoes suit satin and crepe gowns, and tulle shoes suit soft tulle skirts. If your dress mixes fabrics, pick up the one closest to the hem, since that is the fabric your shoes will sit beside in photos.
How do you clean satin wedding shoes?+
Blot marks straight away with a clean white cloth and a little cold water, working from the outside of the mark inwards. Avoid rubbing, which can lift the sheen. For stubborn marks, a small amount of gentle wool wash on a damp cloth works well, and our bridal shoe care guide covers each fabric in detail.
