About Mark Badgley James Mischka

Badgley was born in 1961 in East St. Louis Missouri. When Badgeley first started designing, he was only a child sketching evening clothes, Badgely remembers himself “drawing women and clothes when I could barely hold a crayon.” Badgley then studied art at the University of Oregon and moved to the University of Southern California in which he took part in studying business. In 1982, Badgely enrolled himself at the Parsons School of Design in New York City, where he was able to further pursue studies that led to the success of his career.

James Mischka was born in 1960 and is the eldest of three boys. Mischka was a native of California, where his family moved from the beach life in Malibu to New Jersey when he was 12. Mischka found the transition difficult, he said that “in Malibu we would make love beads and dye our clothes” but “In New Jersey, it was totally chinos and button-down shirts.” In Mischka’s last year of high school he won a National Merit Scholarship and used it for attending Rice University. He studied a biomedical engineering major where he planned on designing artificial limbs as a career. Eventually he changed to an arts-management program at a school in Houston, Texas. In the end he found himself studying at the Parsons School of Design at New York City in 1982.

This dynamic duo finally met studying at Parsons, graduating in 1985. Before the success of their ‘Badgley Mischka’ line, both men spent their time designing for leading fashion lines - Mark for Donna Karan and James, the men’s collection for Will Smith.
